Ms. Sachnoff is an expert in early childhood education, hunger/obesity prevention, anti-poverty programs and local government.


Katharine Sachnoff is an adjunct lecturer and teaches graduate-level social welfare courses. Previously, she supervised Master of Social Work students in field placement for more than 10 years.

With 30 years of related experience in public policy, advocacy and family services, she has worked in a variety of settings, such as local government, the community, nonprofit organizations, foundations and academia. Her areas of expertise include early childhood education, hunger/obesity prevention, anti-poverty programs and local government. All of her work has focused on creating social justice and empowerment, promoting prevention and fighting poverty. She has led the establishment of a public policy department at the Los Angeles County level; designed and implemented policy-advocacy grant funds; served in upper management in city government; created a place-based organization from the ground up; engaged in community organizing; directly lobbied at the state and federal levels; helped build and lead coalitions and collaborations; trained low-income and immigrant residents in policy advocacy; written proposals to foundations; and established and operated a community grant-making fund.

She received a master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. She has had additional training in community organizing, early childhood development, administration, advocacy and strategic planning.
