Biography
Dr. Kim Johnson is an accomplished 33-year nursing professional with significant expertise in both psychiatric and family medicine. She is dual-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
She earned her Master of Science in Family Nursing Practice, a Post-Master’s in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and her Doctor of Nursing Practice at Georgia Southern University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Before transitioning to academia, Dr. Johnson dedicated 24 years to bedside nursing, particularly in medical-surgical telemetry and psychiatric nursing. While many nurses choose to concentrate on either medical or psychiatric care, Dr. Johnson intentionally pursued and integrated both specialties throughout her career. She believes that her foundation as a Family Nurse Practitioner provides a critical lens for understanding chronic disease and the medical contributors to psychiatric illness, enabling her to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care.
For the past 15 years, Dr. Johnson has taught psychiatric nursing in the University System of Georgia and currently serves in the Doctor of Nursing Practice/Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program at Augusta University. As a University of Georgia Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Fellow, she is committed to evidence-based pedagogy, tailoring her teaching to address the challenges of mental health and the needs of vulnerable populations. A natural mentor, she inspires students to reach higher professional objectives, building strong relationships, fostering resilience, and cultivating leadership.
In addition to her academic role, Dr. Johnson has been practicing at Woods Medical, LLC, an internal medicine office, for the past eight years, where she provides integrated psychiatric and family care. She specializes in psychiatric prescribing with a particular focus on mood disorders, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Her expertise lies in tailoring psychopharmacologic interventions to the complex needs of individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, integrating evidence-based guidelines with individualized, patient-centered approaches.
