IDC Expects Canada’s ICT Market to Face a Significant Slowdown in Technology Spending in 2020 and Beyond

IDC Canada  online

2020-03-26

The coronavirus outbreak across the world and the necessary containment measures put in place by governments will substantially affect the Canadian IT markets, severely accelerating the impact already felt from the supply-driven effects from Asia. In this extremely fluid scenario, International Data Corporation (IDC) now expects to see a significant slowdown in technology spending in 2020 across Canadian organizations, with IT spending expected to decline by -5.0%. "When taking a broad historical view of Canadian IT spending across the past decade, the impact of the COVID-19 crisis is expected to exceed the levels of the 2008–2009 financial crisis. As such, it does represent the most significant deceleration in IT spending growth Canada has experienced in modern time," said Lars Goransson, Managing Director at IDC Canada.

IDC says Canadian IT spending set to rebound, mobile device sales to stall in 2017

IDC predicts smartphone slump, softer ICT growth for Canada in 2016

IT Business  online

2015-12-04

“Cognitive is the buzzword for 2016,” declared Lars Goransson, group vice-president and general manager of IDC Canada. “At least 50 per cent of all developers will include some cognitive attributes” in their applications by 2020, he said. Developers should target cognitive apps towards Canada’s retail, healthcare, finance, government and manufacturing verticals because that’s where cognitive computing will gain traction first, Goransson said. Although Canadian enterprises will experiment with cognitive computing in 2016, the technology won’t attain mainstream adoption here until 2020 – later than in the rest of the world – due to Canada’s shortage of analytics talent, he said...

Mobile trend will push phone, tablet ownership past PCs in 2014

The Globe and Mail  online

Banks and other financial companies will also continue to push mobile wallet solutions, according to IDC Canada general manager and group vice-president Lars Goransson. "Multiple offerings will cause confusion and will initially provide few benefits to incentivize users and we expect only limited take up in 2014," Goransson said. The wearable technology trend is also expected to be pushed hard to consumers in 2014 but not many will take it up, IDC predicts. While 15 per cent of Canadian consumers said in a fall survey that they had "very high interest" in smart watches — and nearly 40 per cent of males between 13 and 17 said they wanted one — even a long-rumoured Apple smart watch wouldn't be an immediate mass market hit, Goransson said...
