Biography
Lonn McDowell is the vice chair of administration for the UF Department of Surgery. His prior experience includes working as a director for an international healthcare consulting firm, serving as the COO of a large multispecialty practice, and the CEO of a cardiovascular physician practice. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and a fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives. He was the Association of Academic Surgical Administrators President in 2020. He has also been an adjunct instructor for the University of Florida’s Master of Health Administration program since 2005, served as a preceptor for UF MHA administrative interns for several years, and currently holds an affiliate professorship appointment in the program.

Maintaining financial stability is important for leaders in surgery because it (1) allows consistent, fair (market value) reimbursement for employees, which conveys that they are valued; (2) enables strategic investment in new programs that may not generate direct financial gains but are required; and (3) builds trust with stakeholders outside the department while strengthening the department’s position in negotiations.
