Biography
Dr. Spies is an assistant professor at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. Her research focuses on hypertension and other non-communicable diseases in low and middle income countries, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. During her recent Global Fulbright she collaboratively implemented a hypertension study in India, Vietnam, and Zambia. Her current funded research endeavor focuses on nurse-led interventions for hypertension in Uganda.
Specializing in global health and building capacity in health care providers, she has taught global health and international clinical courses on the graduate level since 2004. Collaborating with a faculty in public health she developed a multidisciplinary undergraduate study abroad: Global Health in Africa. Her lectures are informed by current clinical practice as family nurse practitioner and by her active involvement in global initiatives and capacity building efforts.
Dr. Spies coordinates the global endeavors for the Louise Herrington Nursing School and facilitates international engagement in faculty, staff, and student. She is committed to cultivating diverse opportunities to include study abroad, mission, and research and scholarly projects.
Dr. Spies serves on the practice committee for the International Council of Nurses Advanced Practice Nursing Network and is past president of the North Texas Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Spies is a member of the Africa APN Coalition and co-founder of the North Texas African Health Initiative and has worked actively in Uganda to build nurse leadership and research capacity since 2007. She has orchestrated development workshops for faculty and nurses in Ethiopia, India, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia.

In early June, the Baylor chapter of Engineers with a Mission returned from Ferrier, Haiti, where they installed solar panels into the community's training center operated by Mission Waco. 2017 Hansen disease, also known as leprosy, is a curable infectious disease that continues to cause great disability and stigma globally, including in the United States. Nurse practitioners may believe that Hansen disease is a rare and ancient disease localized to underdeveloped countries, but it still exists in the US and should be included in the differential diagnosis. Hansen disease, although curable, can lead to deformity and disability if not diagnosed early.
