Madeline Wyse

Madeline Wyse specializes in Rabbinic and Islamic intellectual history, with a particular focus on the literary cultures of Late Antiquity and the medieval Islamic world. Her recent work explores the roles that humor, irreverence, and other literary strategies play in serious religious texts. Her broader research includes work on midrash, the Talmud, Qurʾān commentary (tafsīr), and Islamic legal theory.

Wyse is a passionate educator with experience teaching college writing, undergraduate seminars, and graduate courses at University of California, Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union. Her past courses include "Holy Fanfiction: Retelling the Tales of the Bible and Qurʾān," "Co-Constructing Christianity, Judaism, and Islam," and "Islamic and Jewish Legal Theory." Her teaching emphasizes both intellectual rigor and individualized support, and is informed by extensive experience and specialized training in supporting students with learning differences.
