Social work expert, specializing in the empowerment of low-income families through public policy


Mara Ziegler is an adjunct professor. She teaches social work practice with children and families for first-year Master of Social Work students as well as two electives for second-year students interested in advocacy for adolescents and their families with an emphasis on social work practice with transition-age youth.

A licensed clinical social worker, Ziegler serves as a senior social worker at Public Counsel on the Children’s Rights Project, where she works as part of a multidisciplinary team to empower low-income youth to meet their wide range of needs. Her focus is on pregnant and parenting teens, youth with mental health challenges and youth involved in or transitioning out of the dependency system.

Ziegler is co-chair of Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect’s task force on pregnant and parenting teens.

For more than 25 years, she has been a field instructor for the School of Social Work. In 2003, she received the Master Field Instructor Award.
