Biography

MARIA HU is a clinical associate professor of field education. She has 10 years of experience serving children and families. She has spent her career as a social worker for the Los Angeles Unified School District and as a USC faculty member. She has taught graduate-level field classes and served as a field liaison to many MSW students.

As an LAUSD psychiatric social worker, Hu has provided individual, family and group counseling, as well as crisis intervention and home visits for at-risk students. In overseeing LAUSD’s School Mental Health Field Instruction Program, one of the largest field placement agencies in California, she coordinated the placement of approximately 400 MSW students in school sites and trained students on a variety of evidence-based practices. As the lead intern trainer of the Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) Program, she focused her efforts on crisis/threat response and intervention, suicide prevention, trauma recovery and resiliency, and the implementation and dissemination of CBITS.

In addition, Hu is a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education as an educator on resilience strategies for educators and on school behavior threat assessments. She has also trained school officials on commercial sexual exploitation of children, trauma, psychological first aid and mental health first aid. She is now working on a one-of-a-kind project for unaccompanied minors and families facing deportation proceedings.
