Mark Harris is an expert in information security management and has taught IT and cybersecurity courses at the collegiate level since 2000. In 2016, Harris started as an assistant professor in the Hull College of Business and Cyber Institute at Augusta University, where he primarily taught graduate level cyber security and MBA courses. He is now Director of Graduate Studies in Information Security Management in the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences at Augusta University. Prior to Augusta University, he was an assistant professor of information technology at the University of South Carolina for seven years. Harris has a Ph.D. in Business with a major in Information Systems Security from Virginia Commonwealth University. He also has an M.S. in E-commerce and a B.S. in Business with a major in Information Technology from Old Dominion University. His professional experience includes more than 10 years as a senior network engineer for Old Dominion University, where he oversaw the administration of more than 4,500 computer users, a dozen servers, and 300 client devices. At Old Dominion University, Harris also taught undergraduate and graduate courses in information systems and technology. Harris’s research interests include mobile device security, behavioral factors of security, security policy management, security awareness training, security curriculum, and health IT security. He has authored dozens of manuscripts in well-respected refereed information systems and security journals and conferences.

While large enterprises have the resources to implement emerging security recommendations for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, small- to medium-sized enterprises (SME) often lack the IT resources and capabilities needed. The SME mobile device business dilemma is to invest in more expensive maximum security technologies, invest in less expensive minimum security technologies with increased risk, or postpone the business mobility strategy in order to protect enterprise and customer data and information. This paper investigates mobile device security and the implications of security recommendations for SMEs.
