Langford, WCU’s director of admissions, suggested to pilot waiving the application fee for the first year and transfer students for 2022 as a way to stimulate application submission and remove a barrier to admission review and offers. Doing so would mean a one-year loss in operational funds for his unit, but the idea and potential payoff for the university was shared with Executive Council, which expanded the idea to graduate school applicants as well.

“After the first semester, obviously, you have a group that graduates, and you have some students that don't come back," he said. "This year, I think COVID is obviously impacting that a little bit more,” said Mike Langford, WCU admissions director. “COVID's had a lot of effect on family financial situations, jobs." But first-year applications are running almost 12 percent ahead of last year, even though the online application was activated by the university two weeks later this year. Transfer applications are up 54 percent over last year.

"To date, more than 3,600 applications for admission for next fall are in hand," said Mike Langford, director of admissions. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions encourages prospective students to visit campus, either through attendance at one of several open house events held throughout the year or by participating in weekday campus tours, to see if WCU is the right fit for them, Langford said.

“When we might have been a second or third choice on somebody's list, I think we've moved up to a first choice because of NC Promise, because the quality of the academics here is great,” said Mike Langford, WCU director of admissions. Langford said because of the high numbers, WCU is implementing a wait list for the first time. He said some students may have to start in January.
