Biography

From Enron to oil spills, from sub-prime mortgages to bankers’ bonuses, trust in big business is at an all-time low. There is a suspicion of major corporations which, fairly or unfairly, is leading to intense scrutiny of our actions and practices and is impacting dramatically on the marketplace in which we trade.

The business leader of today must be competent to build organisations that generate profit and consistent shareholder return while recognising society’s expectations and the public scrutiny to which his or her words, actions and efforts are subjected. But Business Schools do not prepare leaders for this intense scrutiny that is today more than ever a part of the leader’s life - and will not go away.

My mission is to work with Business Leaders to understand the impact and implications of this shifting environment; to help the Leader build a successful leadership team and, through that team, to create business success in a way that is applauded by shareholders and society alike.

I have learnt about leadership through my 40 years’ experience. My business career has included senior executive positions in seven countries on three continents, through publicly owned organisations to roles as CEO of global company $1bn subsidiaries and, latterly, as business strategy consultant to a FTSE Top 10 global Company.

From warships and nuclear missiles to coal-fired and nuclear power generation, to alcohol – all of them controversial, but never as much as now, I’ve worked in the fields of engineering design, quality consulting, project management and leadership training. I’ve run complex manufacturing and generation plants, start-up operations, led marketing and sales teams and acted on the Boards of Companies involved in research, agriculture, production, distribution, sales and marketing.

Through all this, I’ve learnt how to build and coach effective leadership teams to help me achieve business success that is sustainable over the long term.

Through my interest in leadership I helped found the Prague Leadership Institute, with its vision “To create the center of excellence for the development of high performance 21st century leaders.”
