No 'involuntary job losses' as hundreds of teachers receive layoff notices
City News tv
2019-04-17
Hundreds of teachers across the GTA received layoff notices this week, with more expected. On Tuesday, Ontario’s second-largest school board – the Peel Region District School Board – told more than 300 teachers that they were being “surplused” for the next school year. Wednesday, they were joined by the Halton Public School Board which told about 150 elementary teachers they would be “potentially redundant,” though the board hopes to call some of those teachers back. Notices have also gone out to teachers in Toronto, Dufferin-Peel, Hamilton, and Halton, but parents and teachers are still wondering what will this mean in the classroom? And is the provincial government going back on its promise not to cut frontline jobs? Education Minister Lisa Thompson has said repeatedly that the surplus letters are not cuts to teachers. “There will be no involuntary job loss associated with our education plan and how we are moving forward to fix a broken system,” says Thompson. The Progressive Conservatives’ plan involves increasing average class sizes in Grades 4 through 12 and mandatory online courses for high school students. “I have to be very, very clear, what we’re hearing about coming from Peel region, is a routine process that is happening in every school board across Ontario. This time of year is when school boards take a look at their roster, they identify who’s coming back from maternity leave, they’re identifying who is retiring, they are identifying who might have an assignment to take them to the board or who’s coming back from posibily a coaching assignment,” says Thompson. “The fact of the matter is what we’re hearing about these recent weeks is a routine, absolute process that is done year in, year out.” Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, which has sent notices to 170 teachers, told CityNews in a statement that the annual review was influenced by the education changes. “This is a typical part of the annual staffing process which has been exacerbated by changes to secondary class size ratios and other Ministry changes,” says Bruce Campbell, spokesperson for the DPCDSB. “Some of those teachers who have received a surplus notice will be placed in permanent teaching vacancies, while others may be placed in long-term occasional assignments. It is expected that all those who received surplus letters will retain full-time employment with the board.” For any Ontario teachers who don’t get a new posting, the move from full-time to occasional or

The Canadian prime minister is embroiled in a scandal that could undermine his bid for re-election. 0 Comments 0 Shares Pocket Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came to power in 2015 promising a new era of government transparency and inclusion, especially for women and indigenous communities. But a corruption scandal involving the engineering firm SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. not only threatens his hope for a second term, but the political future of his Liberal Party. The controversy began when Jody Wilson-Raybould, Canada’s first indigenous attorney general, said she was demoted to minister of veterans affairs because she resisted pressure to defer prosecution of SNC-Lavalin, a Montreal-based company accused of bribery and fraud. SNC-Lavalin has said it ousted the executives involved and implemented stricter ethics policies. Trudeau and his office have also denied any wrongdoing. While many Liberal MPs stood by the prime minister, Treasury Board President Jane Philpott resigned from his Cabinet, citing a loss of confidence in how the affair has been handled. Last week, Wilson-Raybould and Philpott were both expelled from the Liberal caucus. The entire ordeal has put considerable pressure on Trudeau ahead of October’s federal election, giving ammunition to political rivals and calling into question his commitment to the progressive values that helped him become a left-wing darling worldwide. So, will Prime Minister Trudeau be able to weather the storm, or will his office’s alleged mismanagement of the SNC-Lavalin scandal upset his political ambitions and those of the Liberal Party? Join the conversation. On this episode of The Stream, we speak with: Chris Selley @cselley Columnist, National Post nationalpost.com Muneeza Sheikh @Muneezalawyer Senior lawyer, Levitt LLP levittllp.com Niigaanwewidam Sinclair @Niigaanwewidam Professor in Native Studies, University of Manitoba umanitoba.ca

A company's size could determine how it deals with sexual harassment
City News tv

Sexual harassment isn’t something that just happens in Hollywood or political quarters — it happens in most workplaces across Canada. Recent data suggests that more than 50 per cent of working women have experienced unwanted sexual pressure. New rules put in place by the Ontario government require provincially-mandated companies to have had a policy in place since September of last year to try to prevent harassment. However, very little protections exist for individuals who may be innocent of harassment but still stand accused. According to Muneeza Sheikh, a senior partner with Levitt LLP, there is far more pressure on large-scale employers with a public persona to deal with the incident “quickly and efficiently” because every step they take will be scrutinized by the public. “I think the larger (employers) are facing a lot of pressure to protect their brand, their public image and to issue a termination quickly,” she explained. Sheikh said smaller or medium-sized employers, who do not have those public relations concerns, may be more inclined to investigate the claim fully before taking action to discipline the employee, which may not mean termination. “I think they are more inclined to take a step back and say ‘look, these allegations have been made but we haven’t done much to investigate them. We want to talk to the complainant, we want to talk to the person who the complaint is about and we want to potentially talk to other witnesses as well and get the full story,'” she said. Sheikh added that employers have a duty to not only have concrete anti-harassment policies in place, but to ensure that their staff are well-versed and formally trained in the procedures.
