Biography
Peter Reinhart is founding director of the Institute for Applied LIfe Sciences, established in 2014 at UMass Amherst with the vision to translate fundamental research into innovative product candidates, technologies, and services that deliver benefits to human health and well-being.
Reinhart has more than 20 years of R&D management experience in the neuroscience and orphan disease space. He has led drug discovery programs in academia, biotechnology, and large Pharma. As CSO at Proteostasis Therapeutics he implemented and directed drug discovery programs for the disease-modifying treatment of protein misfolding, sorting, trafficking and clearance-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and cystic fibrosis.

Peter Reinhart, who is the technical supervisor at the university's clinical testing lab, said the results have helped UMass identify COVID outbreaks early and respond accordingly. "Let's just say [there's a] dorm [with] 500 people," he said. "We see an elevated signal. We send out an an email to just those 500 residents, saying, please come in and provide a nasal swab."

Peter Reinhart, the director of the Institute for Applied Life Sciences, said in a statement that the institute “facilitates industry collaborations, new ventures and contributes to workforce development in the discovery, development, and manufacture of medical devices, biomolecules, and delivery vehicles. “MassBio opening an office at IALS will help raise awareness of the unique resources available to MassBio’s extensive membership,” Reinhart said.

Cutting-edge research that scientists believe could help keep people healthy and create a significant economic boost for the region is taking place inside the labs of a new $150 million life sciences institute that state and university officials formally opened Friday at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Peter Reinhart, director of the institute, acknowleded the good work occurring at the institute at a daylong ceremonial opening of the building on Friday. “How do we translate it into something that matters?” he asked.
