Richard Dang, PharmD, APh, BCACP is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Program Director of the PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Pharmacy, and is Speaker and Board of Trustees for the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA). He is also the CPhA 2018 Distinguished New Practitioner and the SGVPhA 2019 Pharmacist of the Year.
In addition to being California's first advanced practice pharmacist, Dr. Dang is a residency trained, board certified ambulatory care pharmacist. He completed a postgraduate residency program in community pharmacy practice at the USC School of Pharmacy, where he also received a teaching certificate and his Doctor of Pharmacy, Biological Sciences, and Health Communication degrees. His residency training included providing clinical pharmacy services in community pharmacy and ambulatory care pharmacy-based clinics. He also completed internships at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, CVS/pharmacy, and Kaiser Permanente.
Dr. Dang's practice sites include the USC International Travel Health Clinic and the collaborative practice clinics with the Community Pharmacy Patient Care Program at the USC Pharmacies and Keck Medical Center of USC. His practice interests include: medication therapy management (MTM), comprehensive medication management (CMM), community-based pharmacy practice, advanced pharmacy practice, international travel health, immunizations, community health, and disease screening, management, and prevention.
Dr. Dang coordinates courses in introductory and advanced community pharmacy practice, self-care/non-prescription therapies, and travel medicine. He is a national trainer for the NACDS Community Pharmacy-Based Point-of-Care Testing Certificate program, APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Certificate program, and the CPhA Advanced Pharmacy Pharmacist Certificate program.
He is the chapter advisor for the Phi Delta Chi Omicron Chapter, the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), and the California Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists. He is on the Board of Directors of the Phi Delta Chi Omicron Alumni Association, the California Pharmacists Association, the San Gabriel Valley Pharmacists Association, the Journal of Contemporary Pharmacy Practice Editorial Review Committee, and the Pharmacy Leadership Network (PLN).

The first California pharmacist to receive an Advanced Practice Pharmacist (APh) license was Richard Dang, PharmD, an assistant professor of clinical pharmacy at USC School of Pharmacy. He helped develop the Advanced Practice Pharmacist Certificate Training Program with the California Pharmacists Association and the National Association of Chain Drug Stores. “There’s a lot of potential to make a difference and help others see pharmacists in a different light,” Dr. Dang told the USC School of Pharmacy newsletter. “Community based pharmacists are on the front line and readily accessible, so it makes sense to be able to provide this kind of care where patients live, work and play.”

The USC School of Pharmacy and its faculty and alumni continue to offer leadership in expanding the role and recognition of pharmacists as crucial healthcare providers. Richard Dang, PharmD ’13, assistant professor of Clinical Pharmacy, recently became the first pharmacist in California to receive an advanced practice pharmacist license. The State Board of Pharmacy established the licensure, made possible by Senate Bill 493, at the end of 2016.
