Robert H. Moorman is the Frank S. Holt Jr. Professor of Business Leadership at the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business.

Biography

Robert H. Moorman is the Frank S. Holt Jr. Professor of Business Leadership at the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, Elon University. Prior to joining Elon in 2011, he held the Robert Daugherty Chair in Management at Creighton University. He received his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Indiana University in 1990.

Dr. Moorman teaches leadership and organizational behavior classes and consults with businesses on the topics of leadership development and workplace engagement. Professor Moorman’s research interests include the study of leader integrity, work group cooperation, organizational justice, and the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors. He has published articles on these and other topics in Leadership Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, the Journal of Applied Psychology, the International Journal of Leadership Studies, the European Management Journal, and Group and Organizational Management. He has also co-authored book chapters on the relationship between trust and organizational citizenship behavior (published in the Oxford Handbook on Organizational Citizenship) and on the relationship between organizational justice and organizational citizenship behavior published in The Handbook of Organizational Justice.

In a 2008 study of the impact of management research, Dr. Moorman was ranked as #121 in a list of most-cited scholars in the field of management from 1981 – 2004. In between 1990 and 2019, his research has been cited over 21,000 times by other scholars.

Even though much research has emerged recently supporting the importance of perceived leader integrity judgments on how followers develop trust in their leaders, our efforts to understand possible mechanisms for these relationships have not yet yielded detailed explanations. One reason for this is that most research on perceived leader integrity and trust has used unidimensional measures of each construct, even though recent research has called for more complex treatments of them. The purpose of this study is to couple the use of a recently developed, multidimensional measure of perceived leader integrity with a multidimensional measure of trust to examine possible explanations of how they relate. Results support the value of modeling perceived integrity in two dimensions and support a more nuanced model of how integrity may affect trust when trust is similarly modeled as multiple dimensions. We discuss the implications of these findings for our understanding of how leader integrity may affect trust and other outcomes.

Organizational Citizenship Behavior and Trust: The Double Reinforcing Spiral The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Citizenship Behavior

Research on trust and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) has focused mostly on how OCB performance may be a consequence of trusting relationships. However, recent studies of trust have sought to both broaden and deepen our understanding of trust and develop our appreciation of the complexity of the construct. This chapter examines how contemporary treatments of trust enhance our understanding of how trust and OCB performance interrelate. We argue that the relationship between trust and OCB is best modeled as reciprocal, taking the form of a double reinforcing spiral. We further discuss how this model informs our understanding of felt trust, trust violation, and trust recovery.

Perceived leader integrity: Supporting the construct validity and utility of a multi-dimensional measure in two samples The Leadership Quarterly

The empirical study of perceived leader integrity has lagged its intuitively appealing role as a fundamental characteristic of effective leaders. Following theoretical examinations of the definition of integrity and previous work arguing that perceived integrity emerges from judgments of leader consistency and leader morality, we developed a multidimensional measure that includes both perceived morality and consistency items. In a first sample of university students, confirmatory factor analyses and results from regression analyses relating the dimensions to direct measures of leader integrity and trust offer partial support for the utility of including dimensions of moral behavior and consistency (represented by behavioral integrity). Further, we replicated these findings in a second sample of working professionals and found support for our hypotheses showing that dimensions assessing behavioral integrity and moral behavior related to leader effectiveness, job satisfaction, work engagement, and intent to quit as mediated by trust in the leader.
