Professor of Studio Arts

Rudy Fleck was born in Bayreuth, Germany, into a family dislocated by the wars of the first half of the 20th century. The family settled in Los Angeles in 1955. Fleck's decision to pursue a career in art was solidified during his college sophomore year in Vienna. After earning a B.A. at Loyola University (Los Angeles) in 1973, he completed his M.F.A. at the University of Oregon in 1977. He began teaching ceramics and sculpture at LMU in fall of the same year.

He served as Chair of the Department of Art and Art History from 1985 to 1991. Fleck has received Faculty Research Grants for his development of large scale ceramic forms and for research into weathered metallic alloys on clay. He was awarded the President's Fritz B. Burns Distinguished Teaching Award in 1997 and is currently engaged in research of raw materials applications to high temperature glazes.
