Now, in a project funded by the U.S. Army, two University of Florida engineers have designed, built and successfully tested a combined power-refrigeration system that can provide all three – and, with further development, be made compact enough to fit inside a military jet or large truck.

Engineering researchers at the University of Florida have found that the performance of home and business air conditioners plummets when they are undercharged with coolant – and that the problem is both common and easily remedied. Most consumers would recover the cost of having their system charged in savings on power bills in three months, the researchers say.

A Unified Review of Physical Modeling of Heat and Mass Transfer Processes in Frosting and Icing

This review covers issues not addressed in a review paper dealing with icing and frosting before. For example, in icing, we start from the role of nonuniform distribution of large droplets in clouds to the effect of droplet impaction, splashing, and mixing of the water layer. We highlight the important assumptions that have traditionally been made and identify those that weaken the validity of the analysis. We emphasize that the distribution of droplets in the cloud, their turbulent trajectory toward the airfoil, and the impingement and phase change processes on the airfoil are all stochastic processes.

This study analyses the Messinger/Myers model by critically evaluating simplifying assumptions through a rigorous formulation of the rime ice accretion process. It explores the effects of both constant and variable ice density and thermal conductivity, along with the effects of sublimation from the ice surface.
