Biography

SA Sherif is professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering. He is a Life Fellow ASME; Life Fellow ASHRAE; Fellow Royal Aeronautical Society; Fellow American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineers (ASTFE); Associate Fellow AIAA; Vice President Commission B-2 of the International Institute of Refrigeration; Member Board of Directors of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy; and Founding Member of ASTFE. He served as Chief Editor of the ASME J. Thermal Science and Engineering Applications from 2014 to 2019 and as Chief Editor of the ASME J. Solar Energy Engineering since 2020. He has served on the ASME Joint Board of Editors since 2014 and is on the editorial boards of 30 archival journals in thermal, fluid and energy sciences. He has 700 publications and two U.S. patents.

A Unified Review of Physical Modeling of Heat and Mass Transfer Processes in Frosting and Icing

This review covers issues not addressed in a review paper dealing with icing and frosting before. For example, in icing, we start from the role of nonuniform distribution of large droplets in clouds to the effect of droplet impaction, splashing, and mixing of the water layer. We highlight the important assumptions that have traditionally been made and identify those that weaken the validity of the analysis. We emphasize that the distribution of droplets in the cloud, their turbulent trajectory toward the airfoil, and the impingement and phase change processes on the airfoil are all stochastic processes.
