Biography

Dr. Scott Hansen is chair of the department of engineering at Southern Utah University. His research interest includes the publication of CAD software books, currently, he has four CAD software books published by Industrial Press and SDC Publications.

Dr. Hansen’s software application experience includes IBM Fastdraft, VersaCAD, AutoCAD, Mastercam, Inventor, SolidWorks, Solid Edge and CATIA V5. He teaches freshman through senior-level courses in the CAD/CAM Engineering Technology program

Dr. Hansen earned an associate of applied science in electro-mechanical CAD from Pima Community College, a bachelor of science and masters of education in vocational education from Northern Arizona University, and a Ph.D. in applied science and technology from the University of Wyoming.

This marks as 18th year this competition has been running. The competition was started by Dr. Scott Hansen, Professor of Engineering Technology. Hansen said that he always looks for opportunities to give students a chance to make something and apply it to the real world.

The Future of Industrial Technology Education at the K-12 Level

For the greater part of the 20th century, industrial education was deemed successful; and its enrollment steadily increased (Barlow, 1967). Schools offered a wide variety of classes under the titles of industrial education, industrial technology education (ITE), and technology education. The label ITE was used in this study as an umbrella term for both technology education programs and the traditional subjects (e.g., woods, welding, and electronics) that may be taught in the technology education area.

CCET 1010 Intro to Engineering and Techical Design

An introductory course covering the basis of manual drafting and design. Course includes instruction in practices and procedures used in mechanical design, architectural design and civil design. Course will include instruction in orthographic projections, isometric drawings, section views, auxiliary views, elevations, floor plans, and plat maps.

CCET 1040 Intro to Residential Architecture Using AutoCAD

An introductory course in residential architecture to apply drafting standards & terminology using CAD technology to prepare plans for the construction industry using AutoCAD. Topics include; The fundamentals of AutoCAD, Architectural Careers; Construction Procedures, Teams, & Prints; Conventions & Procedures; 2D Sketching; CAD Applications; Architectural Symbols; Floor Plans; Foundations; Wall, Stair & Cross Sections; Roofs; Elevations; Site Plans; and Electrical Plans.

CCET 2620 3D Design

This course is designed to introduce the student into the world of 3-D Parametric Design and Modeling using Inventor and/or Solid Works software. The course starts with creating constrained sketches and extruding and/or revolving the sketch into a solid. The course will then go into creating a production drawing from the created solid. The production drawing would include all required orthographic views, detail views, section views and projected views as well as dimensioning and text. From there the course will go into creating and parametrically constraining assembly 3-D models. The last section of the class will allow the student to apply this new modeling knowledge to a real world project.

CCET 2650 Mechanical Blueprint Reading

A course designed to assist in the interpretation of machine, welding, and sheet metal type drawings. You will apply techniques understand symbols, abbreviations, nomenclature and blueprint protocol.

CCET 3610 Architectural Design

An introduction to architectural design and architectural working drawings with solar design applications. Study of architectural practices, procedures, symbology, dimensioning techniques, standards and terminology, traffic patterns. Practical applications in energy efficiency, solar design, planning and functional utility in design and working drawings.

CCET 4600 Engineering Design

A course in design applications, solving technical design problems and using problem solving techniques and research techniques along with industrial reference materials in the final mechanical design analysis, will use advanced design and CAD applications. Design procedures in flat pattern development, calculate setback and bend allowance. Apply reverse engineering and production drawing applications.

CCET 4960 Senior Project

Consideration of selected CAD-CAM problems. Presentation of topics by students, department faculty, and CAD-CAM industry representatives.

ENGR 1030 Computer Assisted Design Using SolidWorks

Introduction to using computer aided drafting (CAD) in engineering design. Topics covered include 2-D and 3-D drafting and the integration of drafting with engineering design software, use of layers, blocks and components, scaling, organization of engineering drawings, and drawing commands specific to Solidworks.
