Biography
TOMS Shoes has grown to be a household name for its philanthropic approach to solving poverty. Yet Shawn Humphrey would argue against the popular brand’s approach to sustainable change in the under developed countries.
An associate professor of economics at the University of Mary Washington, Dr. Humphrey holds that our generation will not solve poverty. In fact, he says that we are going about solving poverty the wrong way.
The founder of the Two Dollar Challenge, Month of Microfinance, Poverty Action Conference and La Ceiba Microfinance, Dr. Humphrey takes a different approach to solving poverty that focuses on partnerships and long-lasting change in developing countries. He shares his thoughts on poverty in his blog, Blue Collar Professor.
Dr. Humphrey also serves on the Board of Directors of Students Helping Honduras, a former Clinton Global Initiative University mentor, is an Opportunity Collaboration alumnus and the 2014 Feast on Good Speaker. Currently, he is IMAGINE Social Good’s First Social Good fellow and a 2015 Social Impact media award judge.
