Dr. Suh Chen Hsiao, a Taiwanese Native, is a USC MSW alumna of 1990 specialized in health concentration. She is the Clinical Associate Professor with Department of Adult Mental Health & Wellness and serves as the Associate Director for Field Education.
Prior to her joining USC in 2010, she worked as a clinician, supervisor and manager in a wide range of community settings for twenty years. These included inpatient medical, home health, adult day health, inpatient and outpatient mental health, and K-12 school settings.
During her tenure with Los Angeles Unified School District (2000-2010), she was the administrator of School Mental Health Unit where she coordinated the District school-based program and established the San Pedro Clinic under the LACDMH Medi-Cal Rehabilitation guideline. She implemented several evidenced-based practices such as “Second Step”, “Why Try”, “Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools”, “Back in Control” and “Taking Charge” and supervised over 54 MSW/MFT interns from USC, UCLA, CSUDH, CSULB and Loyola Marymount University including taking on the first USC military student in 2008.
In her current administrative role, she oversees 5,000+ field placements and supports students, faculty and community partners in creating meaningful field experiences that meet the Council of Social Work Education 2015 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards. She has been a part of the Geriatric Interprofessional education consortium developed by Keck School of Medicine in collaboration with other health disciplines (OT, PT, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Physician Assistant) and provides students with IPE experiential learning.
Her passion and commitment to develop Global Social Work program made significant contributions through Council Social Work Education China/US initiative. She facilitated several immersions programs as well as international academic exchange. Her research interests are with childhood trauma, immigrant older adults & their caregivers, MSW students’ learning outcome, behavioral health and interprofessional collaboration.
Dr. Hsiao is the Principal Investigation for HRSA Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students: The Primary Care Project (2020-2025): A national workforce program for social work students committed to behavioral health in primary care in medically underserved communities (MUCs). She also contributes to two USC HRSA BHWET and OWEP-funded programs: West Coast Project and Coast to Coast Project.
