Dr. Steven Meredith has a joint appointment at Southern Utah University as both an Assistant Professor of Music, where he is the Director of the Music Technology program, and as an Assistant to the President for Institutional Effectiveness.
Dr. Meredith's career in higher education has been remarkably varied and innovative. As an administrator, he has established dozens of new associate, bachelor and master's degrees in music and technology. He has built and run a number of technology and production facilities, including a full-fledged TV station. He has served as a dean, department chair, and in many other positions of leadership.
Dr. Meredith earned his bachelor of arts in music and master of music in choral music education from the University of Utah and his doctor of musical arts in choral music from Arizona State University.

With the stated goal of addressing critical issues facing colleges and universities, Southern Utah University recently launched the “Solutions for Higher Education” podcast. The podcast tackles topics in an easy to understand conversation between SUU President Scott L. Wyatt and Dr. Steve Meredith, assistant to the president for institutional effectiveness. The weekly podcast will feature their insight, as well as research and opinions from industry experts.

As the director of choral activities and music technology at Southern Utah University, Steve Meredith wants students to experience the reality of life for a musician on tour.
“For every minute of what feels really glamorous, there’s three hours of just backbreaking, drudgery work and rehearsal,” Meredith said in an interview. “It’s wonderful when it all comes together, and it is pretty glamorous when it all comes together. It’s a pretty hard job.”
Twenty-one Southern Utah University students will get to experience a taste of that life as they accompany Josh Groban and Sarah McLachlan in their On Stage tour performances Friday, Aug. 19, in Denver and Saturday, Aug. 20, at USANA Amphitheatre in West Valley City.

As the music industry continues to expand, Southern Utah University remains at the forefront of innovation, it said in a news release, as it launches a new music technology master’s degree program this summer – the first university in the state to offer this degree.
The music technology master will offer students more flexibility in the job market, said Steven Meredith, SUU’s director of choral activities and music technology.

MUSC 4180 Survey of Music Technology
This course introduces various types of computer technology and audio hardware and its application to music. The course includes instruction in music notation, MIDI sequencing, digital recording and hardware associated with recording and live performance.
MUSC 6100 Introduction to Music Graduate Study
This course is an orientation and introduction to graduate study in music at Southern Utah University, focusing on program technology requirements, current readings and trends in music technology, techniques of scholarly writing, and the application of the student’s personal experiences, opportunities, and ambitions as related to their anticipated career and life objectives within the music industry.
MUSC 6350 Music Technology and Business
This course will focus on music technology tools, platforms and services used by the modern music entrepreneur. Study topics will include office technology, copyright/licensing services, royalty collection services, distribution platforms, multi-user project platforms, and the impact, both positive and negative, that technology has had on the music business.
