Well before the uncertainty of the pandemic, Orion Travel Insurance, a CAA company, decided to change the way travellers access travel insurance online. Working with a team of anthropologists, the goal of the redesign was to better understand how humans think about travel and safety. Researchers scoured opinions online, analyzed media and sat down with travellers to document their feelings around travel. “The traditional way of building an online quoting system just wasn’t sufficient,” says Kellee Irwin, VP, Orion Travel Insurance Company. “We didn’t feel that the online experience was putting the needs of the traveller first, so we turned it on its head and approached things differently. We are confident that this new approach to accessing travel insurance and information about travel insurance online is going to be an industry game-changer.” Traditionally, online quoting systems for travel insurance have been designed with business needs at the forefront, rather than designed to reflect what customers need to confidently purchase the appropriate protection. “As a company founded to deliver the protection that our members deserve, this antiquated way of doing things wasn’t good enough. Our mission was to create an online buying experience that was inspired by what it’s like when a traveller engages with a CAA Associate at a store,” adds Irwin. The end result of this in-depth work is the launch of a reinvented online travel quote and purchase system that makes learning about and buying travel insurance an easy and seamless experience for travellers. "Our research told us that travellers want to feel like 'their own best expert'. This new online experience enables travellers to explore and learn about the different types of travel insurance and compare the cost of various levels of protection all at their fingertips," says Irwin. The new system helps customers clearly understand the protection they are viewing and why qualifying questions are being asked. No longer will customers be forced to click through a series of prompts, only to discover that their selections do not reflect their needs and they must start all over again. As they explore coverage and learn more about what protection is right for them, travellers can get to a price in just seven clicks. Plus, they can alter their choices and the system will give updated quotes in real time. It also allows customers to use our SMART FAQ search engine in which the customer enters a question and immediately receives a matched answer. The new online buy flow is now in effect, click here to experience Orion’s reimagined online travel insurance system.

Orion Travel Insurance highlights how travelling around the world will be different With the recent announcement of relaxed quarantine restrictions for fully vaccinated Canadians, many eager travellers may be considering embarking on international travel as soon as possible. Orion Travel Insurance reminds travellers, that a Level 3 Global Affairs travel advisory remains in effect, and Canadians need to understand the ongoing uncertainty associated with international travel. “Entry requirements can vary by destination whether it be a different province, state or country. Travellers need to monitor those requirements closely and be prepared to carry additional documentation like proof of vaccination, and proof of valid COVID travel insurance,” says Kellee Irwin, Vice President, Orion Travel Insurance. “Many Canadians are excited to resume travelling, however a government advisory to avoid non-essential travel remains in place, and Canadians need to take the necessary precautions to ensure they protect themselves before embarking on their vacation.” With many Canadians now looking to book future vacations, Orion Travel Insurance wants to ensure travellers are protected. As of July 1st, Canadians are eligible for full emergency medical coverage with Orion Travel Insurance, even during a Level 3 COVID-19 related travel advisory, if they are fully vaccinated (having received all doses of a Health Canada-approved vaccine) at least 14 days prior to departure. Irwin advises travellers that insurance policies do vary by provider, and may have changed due to COVID-19, so it’s important to review your policy, and understand what you’re covered for before you travel. “Orion Travel Insurance supports the safe return to travel and recognizes the health and safety of Canadians should remain top of mind. We strongly encourage all travellers to ensure their travel insurance includes appropriate medical coverage, and that they continue to monitor evolving entry requirements of their destinations.” Anyone Canadians travelling in the near future should also consider the following tips: A Level 3 Global Affairs travel advisory remains in effect. Before planning any form of travel, Canadians should take steps to protect themselves and others. Canadians and permanent residents will be able to upload a copy of their vaccine certificates to the ArriveCAN app, allowing them to bypass mandatory hotel quarantine when they return to Canada. Travelling standards will vary by destination, and not all services or businesses may be open, or offer full services. Book your accommodations and activities before you go and check out their protocols in advance. Pack face masks, cleaning supplies, travel-sized snacks, water, and hand sanitizer – not only for the trip, but to have on hand at your destination. Monitor local media and government websites to stay informed of conditions and potential changes to entry requirements at your destination. Update your passport so it is ready when you are. And be prepared to pack additional documentation required for your destination, such as proof of vaccination, negative COVID test documentation, and proof of travel insurance. Insurance policies vary by provider. Review your policy and understand what you’re covered for before you travel. Don’t travel if anyone in your party or household is sick.

Orion Travel Insurance, a CAA-owned company, is now the first travel insurer to offer in-province Virtual Emergency Medical Assistance, to provide easier access to emergency medical assistance while on the road. Orion Travel Insurance is enhancing its Multi-Trip Annual Plans and Multi-Trip Annual Vacation Package Plans with Virtual Emergency Medical Assistance that can be used while travellers are in their home province. “We felt it was important to add Virtual Emergency Medical Assistance to in-province travel, to help travellers preserve as much of their vacation as possible if faced with a medical emergency,” said Kellee Irwin, vice president, Orion Travel Insurance. “As COVID related restrictions begin to ease, we anticipate more people will be staying closer to home and choosing travel options within their home province. This will provide additional peace of mind to those who venture out.” Virtual Emergency Medical Assistance is already included as part of Orion’s out-of-province emergency medical coverage and will now extend to travellers within province. The new service is free of charge and is automatically embedded into Multi-Trip Annual Plans and Multi-Trip Annual Vacation Package Plans starting June 8. “Travellers have benefited from Virtual Emergency Medical Assistance while travelling abroad and between provinces for many years, but this same convenience has not been available for in-province travel,” continued Irwin. “Travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted this gap that has been previously overlooked by travel insurers. We are happy to respond and give travellers this added protection.” Existing and new annual plans will include up to four virtual visits through CAA Assistance that will be provided by licensed doctors within Canada. Travellers with Orion’s Annual Travel Plan can access this new feature by contacting CAA Assistance, as you normally would if you experienced a medical emergency while travelling. They will triage your situation and connect you with a Canadian doctor.
