Professor Austin Foley Holmes joined LMU after completing a Ph.D. in the History of Christianity and Historical Theology at Boston College. His primary area of research and scholarship is Patristics / Christian "Late Antiquity" (ca. 200–800). 

Professor Foley Holmes is completing a monograph on the Contemplative Life and the Political (or Active) Life in third and fourth-century Christianity, with a focus on Origen of Alexandria and the subsequent Origenian tradition. He is also translating two fourth-century commentaries on the Psalms by Ambrose of Milan: the Expositio Psalmi CXVIII and the Explanatio Psalmorum XII. Alongside these two larger projects, he continues research and writing on other topics in the History of Christianity. 

His teaching at LMU has included undergraduate and graduate courses such as "The Contemplative Life," "Ancient Monasticism," "Foundations of Historical Theology," and "Last Things: Eschatology."
