Raised in Royal Oak, Michigan, Dr. Barbara Dyer currently teaches private voice and Diction- English, Italian, French and German to majors, and also a non-major class, The Vocal Experience, at Loyola Marymount University. She teaches the graduate course, Comparative Vocal Pedagogy, and undergraduate courses, Vocal Pedagogy and Vocal Pedagogy Practicum at the University of Southern California. She has held positions previously at Occidental College, and was tenured as an Assistant Professor at Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minnesota.
 
Interested in vocal science and new technology that allows greater understanding of the scientific workings of the voice, Dr. Dyer uses VoceVista software created by Donald Miller, Ph.D. She sponsored the first West Coast VoceVista Symposium at Loyola Marymount University in July, 2011. In July, 2010, she was the featured speaker on Computer Technology in Vocal Development at the annual convention of the Music Teachers’ Association of California. In March 2009, Dr. Dyer was asked to present Why I Study Vocal Science to the NATS-LA membership’s General Meeting.
 
Dr. Dyer has completed the Oren Brown Professional Development Program from the New York Singing Teachers Association (NYSTA), and is among the forty who are designated as a Distinguished Colleague. A frequent adjudicator in the Los Angeles area for various musical organizations as the NATS-LA and the MTAC, Dr. Dyer has also written articles for the NATS Journal and NYSTA. Dr. Dyer also studied with distinguished American Academy of Teachers of Singing member, Chloe Owen.
 
Recently a performer on a group recital at El Camino College singing Emmanuel Chabrier’s L’Invitation au Voyage with bassoon (Dr. Dane Teter) and piano (Kenner Bailey), and vocal duets with Dr. Vicki Muto, she is regular performer on Faculty Recitals at Loyola Marymount University. Dr. Dyer has sung Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with the Beach Cities Symphony, soloed with various choral groups in the greater Los Angeles area in concerts of Handel’s Messiah, and Michael Tippett’s A Child of our Time, and other major works.
 
Dr. Dyer is an active member and, currently, the Vice President in charge of Publicity for the National Association of Teachers of Singing. From 2008-2011 she was the Vice President in charge of Programming, a position previously held in 1991-1992, and Secretary from 2007-2008.
