Bryan Reimer, a research scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics (CTL), and the founder and co-leader of the Advanced Vehicle Technology Consortium and the Human Factors Evaluator for Automotive Demand Consortium in the MIT AgeLab, has been appointed to the Task Force on Human Factors in Aviation Safety Aviation Rulemaking Committee (HF Task Force ARC). The HF Task Force ARC will provide recommendations to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on the most significant human factors and the relative contribution of these factors to aviation safety risk. Reimer, who has worked at MIT since 2003, joins a committee whose operational or academic expertise includes air carrier operations, air traffic control, pilot experience, aeronautical information, aircraft maintenance and mechanics psychology, human-machine integration, and general aviation operations. Their recommendations to the FAA will help ensure safety for passengers, aircraft crews, and cargo for years to come. His appointment follows a year of serving on the Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee (TTAC) for the U.S. Department of Transportation, where he has taken on the role of vice chair on the Artificial Intelligence subcommittee. The TTAC recently released a report to the Secretary of Transportation in response to its charter. As a mobility and technology futurist working at the intersection of technology, human behavior, and public policy, Reimer brings his expertise in human-machine integration, transportation safety, and AI to the committee. The committee, chartered by congressional mandate through the bipartisan FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, specifically calls for a portion of the committee to have expertise on human factors but whose experience and training are not primarily in aviation, which Reimer will provide. MIT CTL creates supply chain innovation and drives it into practice through the three pillars of research, outreach, and education, working with businesses, government, and nongovernmental organizations. As a longtime advocate of collaboration across public and private sectors to ensure consumers’ safety in transportation, Reimer’s particular expertise will help the FAA more broadly consider the human element of aviation safety. Yossi Sheffi, director of MIT CTL, says, “Aviation plays a critical role in the rapid and reliable transportation of goods across vast distances, making it essential for delivering time-sensitive products globally. We must understand the current human factors involved in this process to help ensure smooth operation of this indispensable service amid potential disruptions.” Reimer recently discussed his research on an episode of The Ojo-Yoshida Report with Phil Koopman, a professor of electrical and computer engineering. Bryan Reimer, Ph.D., is a Research Scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics and the MIT AgeLab, where he leads research on human-centered technology and how it is shaping the future of mobility and AI. With decades of experience studying the intersection of technology, human behavior, and policy, he serves as a trusted advisor to business leaders and governments worldwide.

Dr. Reimer is a prolific author, sought-after speaker, and recognized innovator whose insights are regularly featured in the media. Guided by a pragmatic possibilist mindset, he focuses on ensuring that technology augments human capability, advances safety, improves affordability, and benefits society.
He is the founder and co-director of two academic-industry partnerships: the Advanced Vehicle Technology (AVT) Consortium, which explores how drivers interact with emerging vehicle technologies, and the Advanced Human Factors Evaluator for Attentional Demand (AHEAD) Consortium, which is developing a holistic approach to driver attention support.

Dr. Reimer is the author of over 350 publications. His research has been sponsored by over 30 organizations and foundations spanning automotive, technology, insurance, consumer products, and pharmaceutical, including multiple Fortune 500 companies. This reflects the broad relevance of his work across industries, shaping the future of how we live, move, and work.

Outside of MIT, he serves on the Research Advisory Board of Autoliv, advises AI Sweden, and previously advised Affectiva through its acquisition by Smart Eye. In 2024, he was appointed by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to the Department of Transportation’s Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee (TTAC), where he served as Vice Chair of the AI Subcommittee. That same year, he was also appointed to the FAA’s Human Factors in Aviation Safety Aviation Rulemaking Committee (HF Task Force ARC).

His 2018 TEDx talk, “There’s More to the Safety of Driverless Cars Than AI,” underscores the human dimensions of road safety beyond automation alone. His 2025 book with futurist Magnus Lindkvist, “How to Make AI Useful: Moving Beyond the Hype to Real Progress in Business, Society, and Life,” argues that AI’s true value emerges when we integrate it thoughtfully into human systems—augmenting, not replacing, human capabilities.

AI Innovation of Sweden seminar International Outlook: Engineering for an AI fueled future, May 17 2019. The concept of automating vehicles and removing the driver from direct control of the throttle, brake, and steering wheel was first explored nearly 100 years ago. Over the decades since automation has infiltrated the automobile. Today we are closer than ever to realizing aspirations of a century ago, but challenges remain. This talk will center on elements of what is known about automation in the vehicle today and our evolution towards self-driving. Through the talk, results from an ongoing naturalistic study of ADAS and ADS being undertaken as part of the Advanced Vehicle Technology (AVT) consortium at MIT will be highlighted.

A sequence of images obtained by a camera mounted on a vehicle is processed in order to generate Optical Flow data including a list of Motion Vectors being associated with respective features in the sequence of images. The Optical Flow data is analyzed to calculate a Vanishing Point by calculating the mean point of all intersections of straight lines passing through motion vectors lying in a road. An Horizontal Filter subset is determined taking into account the Vanishing Point and a Bound Box list from a previous frame in order to filter from the Optical Flow the horizontal motion vectors. The subset of Optical Flow is clustered to generate the Bound Box list retrieving the moving objects in a scene. The Bound Box list is sent to an Alert Generation device and an output video shows the input scene where the detected moving objects are surrounded by a Bounding Box.
