Betsy Sneller’s primary research interest is in language variation and change. Her dissertation work focused on the way that dramatic structural sound change (i.e., phonological change) is represented and produced by individual speakers during the change. As a postdoctoral scholar at Georgetown University, 2018-2020, she used experimental methods to investigate the way that children acquire sociolinguistic and phonological variation. Dr. Sneller is co-director of the MSU Sociolinguistics Lab and the PI of the MI Diaries Project.

That is the question being studied by a team of researchers at Michigan State University, led by associate professor Suzanne Wagner and assistant professor Betsy Sneller.

The Interdisciplinary Water Cooler: Sharing Research Technologies across Disciplines

Can common research technologies serve diverse disciplinary needs? Even disciplines that seem on the surface to have little in common can benefit from casual conversations about the challenges and methods that they might share. In this talk, we show how a simple smartphone app developed for a project analyzing language during the pandemic (MI Diaries) was successfully adapted for a Religious Studies project examining learning about Judaism through the cultural arts (Shtisel Diary). By reflecting on these two case-studies we highlight how the tools that we use to conduct research can be just as interdisciplinary as research projects themselves.

Today we had the privilege to speak with Dr. Betsy Sneller. Professor Sneller received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania and is the co-director of the MSU Sociolinguistics Lab. She works on language change in general (ranging from how kids acquire language variation and push forward language change, to large-scale population studies of dialect change) and is now studying how social distancing during the pandemic is affecting ongoing language changes in Michigan.
