MSOE students are bright, creative, hard-working and fun to be around. Ours is a close-knit community of about 3,000 students, faculty and staff—large enough for big opportunities and small enough for personal attention. Located in a vibrant downtown neighborhood in Milwaukee, MSOE offers students an engaging learning and living environment. The university is fully committed to every student who is willing to be challenged and work hard to become a better person as a successful MSOE graduate

Since 1903, MSOE has been offering an applications-based education, partnering with leaders of business and industry to shape the institution’s development. Early supporters realized that their future depended upon educational institutions that could prepare men and women to fill newly created engineering and management positions.

Today, MSOE offers 17 bachelor’s degrees and 11 master’s degrees. The students who attend MSOE come from all parts of the United States and dozens of other countries. More than 20,000 alumni live and work throughout the United States and abroad, and nearly 2,000 of them own their own businesses or are officers of companies.

Crisis Leadership in Higher Education

Dr. DeAnna Leitzke serves as chair of the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department at Milwaukee School of Engineering. 

Leitzke earned her undergraduate degree in architectural engineering from MSOE and went on to earn her M.S. in Engineering Management from MSOE. She holds a Ph.D. in Leadership for the Advancement of Learning and Service in Higher Education from Cardinal Stritch University. Prior to serving as associate vice president of academic excellence, she founded the CREATE Institute at MSOE in 2018, taught as an associate professor in MSOE’s Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department, and was the Pieper Family Endowed Chair for Servant-Leadership. Leitzke has industrial experience as an architectural engineer with Reserve Advisors Inc. and as an architectural engineer with Affiliated Engineers. 

As a lifelong resident of Milwaukee County, Leitzke is dedicated to serving the community. She is a board member of SHARP Literacy Inc., program quality committee member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, and committee member of the Wisconsin Servant-Leader Group. Leitzke looks forward to nurturing and growing the CAECM department’s mutually beneficial relationships with industry and community partners to provide all students with the opportunity to learn from real-world experiences that help them develop the skillset and mindset they need to solve the complex challenges of today and tomorrow.

Since 1999, Milwaukee Empty Bowls has distributed $705,000 in support of our neighbors, with $692,000 helping feed those in need, plus $13,000 provided for educational scholarships. They do that by bringing people together through beautiful artwork and delicious food generously provided by local restaurants. Joining us to discuss this year's event is Ramie Camarena, Milwaukee Empty Bowls Board Director, and DeAnna Leitzke from MSOE, the event's host and sponsor.
