Beverley Boden is a Principal Lecturer in International Travel and Tourism in  Teesside University Business School at Teesside University. She is a tourism and aviation specialist covering all aspects of tourism, airports and the airline industry (including threats to the travel industry from lockdown). She also researches dark tourism - the reasons for visits, the nature of visitors, and their experiences as they tour landmarks associated with dark periods in history such as Auschwitz, Chernobyl and the ‘killing fields’ of Cambodia.
 
Beverley draws on more than 15 years’ experience in the travel industry. Her experience as a team leader for a number of global tourism brands has afforded her valuable insight to both customer and industry perspectives. A pivotal moment came drawing the tragic events surrounding the 9/11 and 7/7 terrorist attacks. During both events she led teams of customer service professionals in strategic communications and support of individuals affected by the tragedies. It was the impact of such events that first introduced her to the potential of exploring the emotions of ‘difficult heritage’ and the commercial/ethical implications for the travel and tourism industry.  Beverley is a member of the Institute for Dark Tourism Research, and the Institute for Travel and Tourism.
