Duncan-Baker Brown is Senior Lecturer in Architecture in the School of Architecture at the University of Brighton and a Director of BBM Sustainable Design. His work focuses on sustainable design of buildings and the re-use of existing materials. His research tests the viability of a number of practices and materials, recognising the potential of discarded waste as a valuable resource in the future of construction. He has published books including The Re-Use Atlas and The Designers Guide Towards A Circular Economy. He has also worked on projects as diverse as The Greenwich Millennium Village in London with Ralph Erskine, the RIBA’s House of the Future and more recently the multi-award-winning New Country House & Estate Master Plan in Hadlow Down East Sussex. He led a series of thought-provoking ‘house’ projects testing issues of sustainable design and resource management including 'The House that Kevin Built’ in 2008 and ‘The Brighton Waste House’ in 2014.

Duncan is currently leading two Interreg research programmes. One considers the viability of local waste flows to be processed into insulation for the social housing sector. The other tests ideas associated with deconstructing late 20th Century/early 21st Century buildings and re-constructing them. In December 2018 Duncan delivered a keynote address ‘Designers can save Planet Earth’ at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College. He is the curator of the annual ‘Waste Zone’ at FutureBuild.

Day 60 of the 100: As we emerge from months of Covid-19 induced lockdown, architects are now open for business again, with the recent increase in job enquiries and construction sites being open perhaps giving us all a reason to feel a bit more positive. However, before we get back to some new form of ‘business as usual’, we should consider that the built environment is responsible for 50% of all global CO2e emissions, consumes 50% of all raw materials harvested annually around the world, and is responsible for 60% (120 million tonnes) of the UK’s annual waste. Duncan Baker Brown, co-founder of BBM Sustainable Design considers solutions to these existential problems.

Can Architecture Matter?: Duncan Baker-Brown at TEDxBrighton

The University of Brighton hosted an international exhibition and symposium aimed at stepping up efforts to eliminate waste in the construction industry.

Curated by Duncan Baker-Brown, Senior Lecturer from the School of Architecture and Design, the Waste Zone exhibition showed how waste can be a valuable resource for the construction industry. The University of Brighton’s Responsible Futures theme sponsored the Waste Zone exhibition and symposium at the Futurebuild event held at Excel London in 2019. Over 60 speakers discussed the opportunities that the circular economy presents. Attracting international key players, the event is an opportunity to showcase the University of Brighton’s research and enterprise, make a contribution to contemporary debate and provide unrivalled opportunities for our student body to see evolving practice in action.

Waste Zone 2019 - An interview with Duncan Baker Brown

Duncan Baker Brown from BBM Sustainable Design gives his keynote presentation from WasteBuild 2019.

Duncan is one of the leading experts anywhere in the world on circular architecture having practised, researched and taught around the subject for over 25 years and written the RIBA published book 'The Re-Use Atlas:  a designer's guide towards a circular economy'. 

Perhaps best know for his thought provoking 'house' projects including The House that Kevin Build and The Brighton Waste House, his talk at WasteBuild 2019 highlights the importance of the built environment in tackling the climate crisis and uses inspirational but importantly replicable and scalable examples from his own practice and many others to highlight what is already being done now.
