The University of Connecticut (UConn) is one of America’s top 20 public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report. It is home to more than 31,000 students, 1,300 faculty, 230,000 proud alumni, and a handsome husky named Jonathan.

The University has fourteen schools and colleges: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Business, Dental Medicine, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Law, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work. Douglas Brugge is a professor and chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences at UConn Health and is the Health Net, Inc. Endowed Chair in Community Medicine. He became chair of the department in March 2019 after serving as a public health professor at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He did his undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis majoring in biology and chemistry. His Ph.D. is in biology from Harvard University and he has an MS in industrial hygiene from the Harvard School of Public Health. 

Dr. Brugge's teaching is in the areas of occupational and environmental health and community engagement in research. He directs the Community Assessment of Freeway Exposure and Health (CAFEH), a set of studies about ultrafine particles from traffic and their association with cardiovascular health risk (funded by NIEHS, NHLBI, EPA, HUD, and the Kresge Foundation). 

Additional research has been on housing conditions and child asthma, second hand smoke exposure, asthma in Chinese and black immigrant communities, health communication, uranium mining in Native American and other populations, and research ethics. 

Most of his work uses a community-based participatory research approach. He has over 160 publications and has a deep commitment to seeing research translated into policy and practice. He is in the final stages of writing a popular science-level book about nuclear power and climate change.

This October 29 episode of the Somerville Labor Show at the Somerville Media Center, features Host Ed Halloran interviewing Douglas Brugge, Professor of Public Health at UConn Health, and former Public Health Professor at Tufts School of Medicine, about the dangers to adjacent public housing from highway pollution particles, in particular from I-93.

Prof. Brugge, in collaboration with local groups like The Welcome Project and Mystic View Task Force, previously studied the ill-effects of highway pollution from I-93, reported in a Community Assessment of Freeway Exposure and Health Study (CAFEH). He published these findings in his recent book, "Particles In The Air" (2018).

The retrofitting of Somerville's underserved public housing for appropriate ventilation and filtration of these deadly particles is a goal of Somerville Stands Together's local version of a Green New Deal, with ARPA funding.

Also featured is Brugge's daughter Laice Amaré, performing her own unique hip-hop creation, "O2," about highway pollution, no less.
