In the 22 years Freeman Hrabowski has been president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), he has led its transformation into a research institution recognized nationally for its culture of innovation and inclusive excellence. UMBC graduates more African Americans who go on to earn Ph.D.s and joint M.D.-Ph.D.s in the STEM fields than any other predominantly white university in the country. Dr. Hrabowski delivered a Simon Initiative Distinguished Lecture at Carnegie Mellon University on January 26, 2015 entitled "Dr. King's Dream and the American University Today."

The Simon Initiative at Carnegie Mellon coalesces the university's decades of interdisciplinary research into technology-enhanced learning with the goal of continuously improving learning outcomes, both for CMU students, and for millions of people throughout the world. The Simon Initiative convenes experts in cognitive psychology, computer science and human-computer interaction who together are working to unlock the potential of human learning. Dr. Freeman Hrabowski: Dr. King's Dream and the American University Today

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) robots have been underground, on the water and in the air. Now, CMU is taking a robot to the moon. The CMU team held a live demonstration of its lunar robot at the World Economic Forum’s 2015 Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, led by William (Red) Whittaker, Fredkin University Research Professor at CMU and Chairman and Chief Science Officer of Astrobotic Technology. CMU President Dr. Subra Suresh and faculty members - Justine Cassell, Associate Vice–Provost for Technology Strategy and Impact; Illah Nourbakhsh, Professor, Robotics Institute; Director of the CREATE Lab; and Tony Stentz, Research Professor, Robotics Institute; Director, National Robotics Engineering Center - also led conversations at the World Economic Forum meeting about the intersection of natural and artificial intelligence and its implications for people and technology.

What is Carnegie Mellon?

An inflatable robotic arm made of a balloon-like material at Carnegie Mellon University is the inspiration behind the robot character Baymax in Disney's latest animated feature film "Big Hero 6." In the comedy-adventure, Baymax, a gentle robot designed to care for humans, is transformed into a warrior and joins a band of high-tech heroes.

Mobile robots made from soft materials offer advantages over metal robots, including lower weight, lower cost and greater safety when operating near people. At CMU, researchers are proving that these soft robots can do real work while developing technologies, such as artificial muscles, touch sensors and pressure-sensitive skins, that will make them practical. 

Carnegie Mellon University's work in soft robotics is funded by NSF, DARPA, ONR, AFOSR, NASA and Siemens.

CMU Robotic Arm Inspires Disney's Baymax

Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science hosted Max Levchin, an entrepreneur, investor in early-stage startups and a co-founder of PayPal and Yelp, for visit to Carnegie Mellon University as part of a University Tech Tour organized by HVF, his San Francisco-based innovation and investment lab.

Levchin joined David Mawhinney, co-director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, for a "fireside chat” focusing on consumer finance and healthcare.  He also held an open pitch session with CMU students who wanted to propose startup ideas or products for HVF’s consideration.

Fireside Chat with PayPal Founder Max Levchin

John Maxwell Cohn (E'91) delivers the 2014 Alumni Distinguished Achievement Honoree lecture.

Cohn is currently an IBM Fellow in IBM Corporate Strategy. He received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at MIT, and earned a Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University. John has authored more than 30 technical papers and has contributed to four books on design automation. He has more than 65 patents issued or pending in the field of design automation, methodology, and circuits.

He is active in education issues at a local, state and national level and is so passionate about promoting science and engineering that he spent 59 days living and inventing in an abandoned steel mill as part of Discovery Channel's technical survival show "The Colony." John lives in a restored schoolhouse in Northern Vermont with his family and is eager to share his love of science and engineering with anyone who will listen.
