Utah's Lieutenant Governor Awards SUU the Campus Cup

On Thursday, February 14, a group of nearly 60 Southern Utah University students showed their love for SUU by spending Valentine’s Day at the annual SUU Day on the Hill. A full day of events began with Lieutenant Governor Cox presenting the group with the coveted Campus Cup and ended with a meet and greet with legislators from all over the state.

Sponsored by the Lieutenant Governor's office and open to all universities in the state, the Campus Cup was awarded to the entire SUU student body for their outstanding efforts in registering the highest percentage of student voters on campus. The students in attendance were proud to accept the award as it was the first time in school history that the T-Birds have been able to claim this award.

Lieutenant Governor Cox treated the students to a breakfast meet and greet with him and Representative Shipp of District 72, complimented students on their hard work, and encouraged them to continue to increase campus involvement and awareness of state politics.

During the remainder of the day, the group had the privilege to be recognized by both the senate and house during floor time, then mingled with one another during a luncheon that led to a tour of the capitol. The group included students from the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service, MPA program, faculty and staff, and other interested students.

Students later set up the official SUU Day on the Hill event in the rotunda of the capitol building. Red and white decor, dozens of long-stemmed roses, delicious Ruby Snap cookies, and personalized conversation hearts set the mood for legislators to stop by and mingle with students. The students heard first hand the appreciation that the senators and representatives have for our school and the amazing things that have been achieved on campus.
