Biography
Straw teaches respiratory medicine, nonprescription medications and men's health topics. He uses active-learning strategies, including peer instruction, to help pharmacy students apply pharmacotherapy concepts across the curriculum.
His clinical work includes serving as the founding residency program director for a PGY-1 community-based residency at Rocking Horse Center Community Health Center. At the practice site, he helped establish collaborative agreements that enable the pharmacy team to initiate, discontinue and adjust medications for patients with chronic disease. His patient-care activities include medication counseling, lifestyle coaching, motivational interviewing and therapeutic plan development.
Straw's research examines the role of pharmacists in primary care, the practice of self-care and educational strategies in pharmacy training. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from Ohio Northern University, completed a PGY-1 community-based residency at South Dakota State University and is board certified in advanced diabetes management.
