Biography

Deane Evans has three roles at NJIT: he's executive director of both the Center for Building Knowledge and Center for Resilient Design and associate dean of research at Hillier College of Architecture and Design. The centers focus outwardly on getting professionals to rethink how they design and build, through research, demonstration, training and outreach
projects. His centers receive financial support from foundations, private sector corporations, utility companies, energy efficiency programs, and federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Energy.

Evans also is a licensed architect who earlier in his career worked in the private sector, at the American Institute of Architects and at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Currently, he is advocating for “opportunistic retrofitting” in capital projects such as replacing roofs, siding, windows and HVAC systems. That will make the buildings super energy efficient long-term, while taking advantage of a project – like residing – that homeowners are already doing anyway for non-energy reasons. He calls it "future-proofing the country," adding, "You put every building on a path to sustainable resilience." Also, with some 1 million homes re-sided every year in the U.S., this can have a significant impact right away.

Evans also studies microgrids, examining issues around planning, financing, procurement and jurisdiction. This research is funded in part by the DOE.
