Biography
Javier Tibau is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he teaches Computers and Programming and Introduction to Data Structures. His work sits at the intersection of human-computer interaction and full-stack systems development, with a focus on designing and building technology that supports how people actually connect and communicate.
Tibau earned his PhD in Computer Science from Virginia Tech as a Fulbright scholar, after studying VR/AR in Barcelona and growing up between Ecuador and Spain. Before joining VCU, he spent over a decade teaching HCI, programming, and game design as a professor at ESPOL in Ecuador, while building and studying real-world systems.
His recent research includes FamilySong, a networked music-box system he designed, built, and deployed to help families across multiple households stay connected — work that spanned everything from research design and hardware to server architecture.
