Biography

Dr. Sengupta is Chair, Department of Management & Entrepreneurship and Professor at the Zarb School of Business. Dr. Sengupta is also Associate Dean, Business Graduate Education and Executive Director of the Online MBA Program. Dr. Sengupta's teaching and research are in the areas of operations management and supply chain management. He is involved with teaching and curriculum development for the BBA, MBA and Executive MBA programs.

Dr. Sengupta’s current focus areas of research are in the analysis of supply chain management trends and practices, and analysis of industry wide similarities and differences in supply chain practices. Other related research areas of interest include quality management, supply chain security, healthcare operations, distance learning, and cross-functional research with interfaces between Operations/Supply Chain and other areas of business. His research has appeared in Operations Research, Journal of Supply Chain Management, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, International Journal of Human Resources Management, International Journal of Management, Journal of Behavioral and Applied Management, among others. His research has won Best Paper Awards at the Indian Subcontinent Decision Sciences Institute (ISDSI) conference, and the North East Decision Sciences Institute (NEDSI) conference.

Dr. Sengupta has previously taught at Indiana University, Michigan State University and Bucknell University. Immediately before joining the Hofstra faculty, Dr. Sengupta worked in the supply chain management industry at i2 Technologies, Inc., as Director of supply chain management solutions.

Dr. Sengupta earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Business Administration at Indiana University. He has an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, India.

Plan Ahead to Avoid Supply Chain Woes

“A lot of this isn’t in your control, so you need a backup plan,” says Kaushik Sengupta, chair of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship at Hofstra University in Hempstead, which offers an undergraduate program in supply-chain management.

Small businesses that don’t have manufacturing capability in-house are increasingly outsourcing to suppliers, many of whom are abroad.

“Usually they go to whoever the lower-cost producers are,” explains Sengupta.

Small businesses might look into getting an insurance policy that covers disruptions, but they should also conduct an “A, B, C inventory analysis,” he suggests.

The purpose of this paper was to analyze the level of innovation and entrepreneurial culture among Asian multinationals, especially as they face intense competition from large global companies. Past practices and the sense that Asian companies are followers rather than innovators have resulted in the persistent belief that these companies are not sufficiently innovative and do not support or promote an entrepreneurial culture. However, given the rapid development in Asian economies in recent years, it is useful to analyze whether such traditional views and practices are changing and whether employees in these organizations view innovation as a necessary tool.

Factors That Affect Students’ Capacity to Fulfill the Role of Online Learner

Because most undergraduate students are digital natives, it is widely believed that they will succeed in online courses. But factors other than technology also affect students’ ability to fulfill the role of online learner. Self-reported data from a sample of more than 200 undergraduates across multiple online courses indicate that students generally view themselves as having attributes that equip them for online learning. Additionally, course-level factors affect students’ online learning experiences. Specifically, students in qualitative (vs. quantitative) courses and in introductory (vs. advanced) classes reported more positive perceptions of their online learning and various aspects of their coursework.
