Biography

Stanley Schwartz, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of history at Cedarville University. He teaches courses in United States history, military history and qualitative research methods.

His research focuses on Civil War veterans, Civil War memory, Gilded Age politics, the United States armed forces and American national security. His scholarship examines how military service shaped postwar political identities, policymaking and public memory.

Schwartz's published research includes an analysis of the Indianapolis Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument and the competing interpretations of Civil War memory reflected in its design and construction. He is also developing book-length research on Civil War junior officers and their postwar political careers.

Before joining Cedarville's faculty, Schwartz earned bachelor's degrees in history and political economy from Cedarville, conducted research in Australia as a Fulbright postgraduate scholar and completed doctoral study in history at Temple University.
