Tom Smith is considered a specialist in the areas of  labor economics, pricing, film finance, sports economics and finance, and the economics of the entertainment and health care industries. Described as a “jack of all trades and master of them all,” he’s one of Goizueta Business School’s most sought-after experts. Tom brings his research on micro- and macro-economics into the classroom; considered timely and insightful, his perspective has been published by local outlets and international publications alike, including Time. He regularly appears as a financial expert on television and radio – CNN, NPR, and The Huffington Post to name a few – and is frequently quoted in the press regarding trends in unemployment, inflation, trade, and economics-driven topics. An energetic and enthusiastic professor, Tom eschews narrow definitions of leadership. Smith holds a PhD in economics from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

On Aug. 5, the Olympic Games begin in Rio de Janiero. What should be a point of pride for Brazil has been reduced to a cause for concern and worry for athletes, tourists, and international organizers. Hosting the Olympics is not cheap. It can cost the host country billions of dollars in infrastructure costs. During the bidding process, host cities make bold promises of upgrades to transportation, modernized and safe housing for athletes and new event facilities.

Brazil’s economy is currently is a serious recession. Some economists have even said that the economy in this once powerful South American nation has not been in this poor a state since 1901.

Professor Tom Smith specializes in cultural economics and the economics of the arts at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. Atlanta recently raised its minimum wage for city workers. While some balk at the move, one expert says it can lead to a better status quo. "It has served municipalities well to set higher minimum wage rates," says Emory's Tom Smith. "Workers show higher productivity and considerably lower turn-over. Turn-over is one of the largest employment costs across public and private employment!"

Viewership skews to an older audience - with Baby Boomers showing the biggest fandom. The Games have an ongoing challenge to attract a younger audience.  The Olympic broadcast will have to work hard to gain the attention of Gen Z and Millennials.
