Pierre Baldi is a Distinguished Professor of computer science at the University of California, Irvine and the director of its Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics.

Dr. Baldi's group works at the intersection of biological and computer sciences, using probabilistic/machine learning techniques to address biological problems and mine large data sets produced by massive data acquisition technologies, such as genome sequencing, high-throughput drug screening, and DNA microarrays. Current projects include the prediction of protein secondary and tertiary structure, the study of DNA structure in relation to several biological processes (protein binding, gene regulation, triplet repeat expansion diseases), and the analysis of gene expression data. Dr. Baldi's group is building a suite of genomics and proteomics programs for the prediction of protein structure and function and the analysis of microarray data.

Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Artificial Intelligence in Science Institute

Professor Pierre Baldi provided the first keynote at the Northern Lights Deep Learning Conference 2022 (11th Jan. 2022). Pierre Baldi is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Director of the Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics, and Associated Director of the Center for Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems at the University of California, Irvine. Baldi holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology, and he is a leader in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. He has used these approaches for applications in physics, chemistry, and biology. Baldi’s innovative research has been recognized by several awards, including the Lew Allen Research Award and the Microsoft Faculty Research Award. He has published numerous high-impact papers, and he has authored four books that span topics from genomics and bioinformatics, to data mining and the internet.
