The University of Connecticut (UConn) is one of America’s top 20 public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report. It is home to more than 31,000 students, 1,300 faculty, 230,000 proud alumni, and a handsome husky named Jonathan.

The University has fourteen schools and colleges: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Business, Dental Medicine, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Law, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work. Students can choose from eight undergraduate bachelor's degrees with 102 possible majors, as well as seventeen graduate/doctoral degrees and five professional degree programs (MD, JD, etc.).

UConn's main campus in Storrs is admitting the highest-achieving freshmen in University history. Student diversity continues to increase, as does the number of honors students, valedictorians and salutatorians who consistently make UConn their top choice. It's a great time to be a Husky!

Jennifer Necci Dineen is currently an associate professor in-residence on fellowship in the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy (InCHIP) at the University of Connecticut. She is associate director of UConn’s Center for Advancing Research, Methods, and Scholarship (ARMS) in Gun Violence Prevention. Dineen is a survey methodologist whose research focuses on stakeholder attitudes as mechanism for intervention uptake and policy change. She also has expertise in understanding how stakeholders interact with political institutions in the policy process. Dineen works on interdisciplinary research teams in the areas of gun violence prevention and school-based mental and behavioral health policy and practice.

The University of Connecticut’s Center for Advancing Research, Methods, and Scholarship (ARMS) in Gun Injury Prevention and Brown University’s Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy have jointly collaborated to host a four-part webinar series entitled Bearing the Burden. The series focuses on gun violence in America, its
intersection with domestic violence, and its disproportionate impact on women, especially women of color. This series will bring together those focusing on these crucial issues across multiple domains and academic disciplines.

Part 3 - Women of Color, Guns, and the Legal System

Description: Women of color are more likely to be victims of domestic violence in the United States. This panel discusses this phenomenon as well as the unequal treatment women of color receive from the justice system from the higher likelihood of dual arrests to incarceration for self defense in domestic violence situations. The panel will also discuss black women becoming new gun owners as well as being more likely to bear the burden of losing a loved one due to domestic violence.

Gun violence is one of the leading causes of deaths in America, and the leading cause of death in children (https://www.kff.org/global-health-policy/issue-brief/child-and-teen-firearm-mortality-in-the-u-s-and-peer-countries/) . There is several areas of research when it comes to better understanding gun violence including mass shootings, suicide and intimate partner violence.
