Jarrod O. Miller is an agronomist whose research and extension programs address agronomic and environmental challenges facing crop production on the Delmarva Peninsula. His work focuses on soil fertility, seeding rate optimization, and the application of precision agriculture technologies to enhance both productivity and sustainability. Using precision agriculture he integrates drone-based remote sensing into his research to evaluate nitrogen application strategies, monitor and map saltwater intrusion, and investigate crop resilience under variable environmental conditions.

Remote Sensing and Crop Monitoring -- Crop production has a long history of using remote sensing to monitor and assess field variability. Early on, soil surveys overlaid maps on aerial photos, while satellite imagery is now being supplemented with photos from unmanned aerial vehicles. To get the most out of precision agriculture applications, it will be useful to get a broad picture of the history and availability of remotely sensed data, and how it may be combined with in field measurements such as yield or soil electrical conductivity. Stop 5: Fine Tuning Soil Fertility Recommendations and Utilizing Precision Agriculture for Fertilizer and Lime Applications: Amy Shober, Jarrod Miller, and Shawn Tingle (Field 13)
 FRST Soil testing for Potash and Phosphorus (Amy Shober) - The FRST project is a collaboration of over 100 soil science and agronomic professionals representing nearly 50 universities. Currently, FRST provides critical phosphorus and potassium soil test values. and will be used to provide research-based phosphorus or potassium rate response information to assist farmers in selecting the minimum fertilizer rate expected to produce maximal crop yield. 
 Precision Nutrient and Lime Applications (Jarrod Miller) - Sensors measuring plant characteristics, particularly greenness and ground cover, can be used to assist in N based applications. Research at UD is using drone and handheld sensors to examine how starter and sidedress N applications may be accurately modeled for in season use. For other nutrients, we are also using grid sampling to examine lime, phosphorus, and potash applications in coastal fields, measuring effects on both macro and micronutrients.
