Dr. Weisong Shi is an Alumni Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Delaware (UD). Before joining UD, he was a faculty of Computer Science at Wayne State University and served on multiple administrative roles, including the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the College of Engineering, Interim Chair of Computer Science and a Program Director of NSF. He founded the Connected and Autonomous Research Laboratory (The CAR Lab) in December 2017. He is an IEEE Fellow and a Distinguished Scientist of ACM.

How AI will transform the economy: Predicting the next breakthroughs

What exactly is edge computing and how does it relate to self-driving cars? A University of Delaware expert has been diving deep into the subject through the university's Connected and Autonomous Research Laboratory (CAR Lab). 

Weisong Shi is a professor and chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at UD, where he leads the CAR Lab. 

Edge computing is how scientists move computations closer to the user. Self-driving cars have to gather and process big batches of data to work, and in a short amount of time.  The time spent sending data to a physically distant server and then back again may cause delay that could impact real-time decisions. Shi's research with edge computing is working to alleviate that issue without turning every car into a supercomputer that consumes a lot of computing power and energy.

 Shi and his team are building a world-class live research and education infrastructure on the STAR Campus at the University of Delaware.

​​Vehicles have been majorly used for transportation in the last century. With the proliferation of onboard computing and communication capabilities, we envision that future connected vehicles (CVs) will be serving as a mobile computing platform in addition to their conventional transportation role for the next century. In this article, we present the vision of Vehicle Computing, i.e., CVs are the perfect computation platforms, and connected devices/things with limited computation capacities can rely on surrounding CVs to perform complex computational tasks. We also discuss Vehicle Computing from several aspects, including several key and enabling technologies, case studies, open challenges, and the potential business model.

Weisong Shi is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Delaware (UD), where he leads the Connected and Autonomous Research (CAR) Laboratory. Dr. Shi is an internationally renowned expert in edge computing, autonomous driving and connected health. His pioneer paper entitled “Edge Computing: Vision and Challenges” has been cited more than 5400 times. Dr. Shi is the chair of IEEE Computer Society Special Technology Community on Autonomous Driving Technologies (ADT), the Strategic Planning Committee member of the Autoware Foundation. Dr. Weisong Shi is the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the College of Engineering, Wayne State University. He is a Charles H. Gershenson Distinguished Faculty Fellow and a Professor of Computer Science, and leads the Wayne Mobility Initiative (WMI) and directs the Connected and Autonomous Research (CAR) Laboratory, investigating performance, reliability, power- and energy-efficiency, trust and privacy issues of networked computer systems and applications. Dr. Shi is one of the world leaders in the edge computing research community, his pioneer paper entitled “Edge Computing: Vision and Challenges” has been cited more than 4400 times. Dr. Shi has been actively involved in the activities of IEEE Computer Society. He had served as the Chair of the Technical Committee on the Internet (TCI) during 2012-2016. Dr. Shi is the founding steering committee chair of ACM/IEEE Symposium on Edge Computing (SEC), and International Conference on Connected and Autonomous Driving (MetroCAD).
