C. Nataraj, PhD, Moritz Endowed professor of engineered systems at Villanova University’s College of Engineering and director of the Villanova Center for Analytics of Dynamic Systems, along with Turki Haj Mohamad ’21 PhD, has been awarded a patent for the development of a fault detection system that provides a software-based method for diagnosing the nature and magnitude of faults within dynamic mechanical and electrical systems.

Vibration of Mechanical Systems uses a revolutionary approach to teaching the fascinating subject of vibration. Many, if not most, machinery failures have vibration as the root cause. It is hence imperative that mechanical, aerospace, naval, and structural engineers get a firm background in the theory and practice of vibrational analysis and design. This text is aimed at senior undergraduate and beginning graduate students. It uses ample design problems to illustrate vibrations concepts and theory. Most of the concepts are introduced by way of an example problem, which serves to motivate and arouse interest before the theory is presented. It imparts a clear understanding of vibration theory, its mathematics, and its relevance to engineering. Both students and practicing engineers will benefit enormously from well-integrated computer tools, simulations, and many practical examples included in this text.

Vibration of Mechanical Systems

Dr. Nataraj is the Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Moritz, Sr. Endowed Chair position in Engineered Systems, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Director of the Villanova Center for Analytics of Dynamic Systems (VCADS) at Villanova College of Engineering. Unmanned vehicles and robotics is Dr. Nataraj's primary area of specialty. Dr. Nataraj serves as faculty adviser for the College of Engineering's student team to compete in RobotX, an annual, selective international competition on autonomous surface vehicles, organized by the Office of Naval Research and the Association of Unmanned Vehicles International to foster and stimulate research in marine autonomy. Nataraj has received several grants from the Office of Naval Research to investigate the feasibility of developing and testing unmanned ocean vehicles.

Knowledgeable about prognostics, an engineering discipline that predicts the future condition of a component or system, Dr. Nataraj would be a good source for information on machinery maintenance and failure, as well as cutting-edge diagnostic healthcare systems.

Conventional medical diagnostics isn’t working and needs help. The reasons are: the human body is a very complex dynamic system, there is a lot of diversity among humans, and it is difficult to define ‘normal’. But, this where we engineers can come to the rescue! Physics, mathematics and computer algorithms can be used effectively and intelligently to make this situation a whole lot better, and prevent millions of missed diagnoses, unnecessary treatments and deaths. This talk will discuss these ideas and share results from our research in which we are collaborating with doctors to study a mysterious neurological damage that happens in neonates.

Dr. C. Nataraj (Nat) is the Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Moritz, Sr., Endowed Professor in Engineered Systems and the Director of Villanova Center for Analytics of Dynamic Systems at Villanova University. Nat has been Chair of Mechanical Engineering, and the founding Director of the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics & Control. He has taught 23 courses, published a book and about 200 papers in dynamic systems, and serves on the editorial board of several journals. He has received funding from ONR, DARPA, NSF and NIH. Nat has been a Lindback Award finalist and is the winner of the Villanova Outstanding Research Award.

Scholarship@Villanova/Outstanding Faculty Research Award Lecture featuring C. Nataraj, PhD, Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Moritz, Sr., Endowed Chair Professor in Engineered Systems at Villanova University. Dr. Nataraj's talk, titled "Dynamic Systems: The Science of Machinery, Robots, Medical Diagnostics and Autonomy," will describe the research that led him to win the prestigious Outstanding Faculty Research Award.
More specifically, Dr. Nataraj's talk will give an overview of modeling, analysis and control of dynamic systems. This is a very broad area with applications in diverse areas such as engineering, science, economics, biology, etc. Dr. Nataraj will also discuss some interesting results from his research wanderings which will focus on the areas of machinery, robotics and medicine. In addition, the talk will highlight applications without getting into the mathematical intricacies in order to make it comprehensible to a broad audience.
