Villanova University was founded in 1842 by the Order of Saint Augustine. To this day, Villanova’s Augustinian Catholic intellectual tradition is the cornerstone of an academic community in which students learn to think critically, act compassionately and succeed while serving others. The Sixth Edition of Human Resource Management focuses on the enhancement of personal competencies while providing a theoretical and experiential approach to the study of human resource management (HRM).  The authors provide the conceptual background and content necessary to understand the relevant issues in HRM, along with individual and group exercises that require the application of chapter content to specific problems designed to develop critical personal competencies.  Students “learn by doing” by participating in experiential exercises that require the application of HRM knowledge expected of practicing managers and HR generalists.

Human Resource Management

Joyce E. A. Russell, PhD, served as the Helen and Willian O’Toole Dean of the Villanova School of Business and Professor of Management from 2016-2023, during which time VSB experienced tremendous success. Under her direction, VSB strengthened faculty scholarship and teaching; enhanced programming for undergraduate, graduate and executive students; and created an Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion based on Villanova’s Augustinian Catholic mission. Dr. Russell also worked to upgrade classrooms, labs and study spaces; expand connections with alumni and employers; and maintain strong fundraising, helping VSB to strengthen its reputation as an international leader in business education. She has been named dean emeritus and will remain at Villanova University as a professor of management. 

Additionally, she is a licensed industrial and organizational psychologist and has more than 35 years of experience consulting with both private and public sector organizations. Her expertise is primarily in the areas of leadership and management development, negotiation tactics, executive coaching and change management.
