Newsday interviewed Dr. Meena Bose for the article, “After Kamala Harris loses, is America just not ready for a woman to be president? Experts say it’s not that simple.”

Dr. Bose said that while gender may have played a role in Harris’ defeat, it’s the “not the dominant explanation” for Trump’s victory.

“I don’t think that 2024 is a referendum on whether a woman can be president,” she said. “That’s not the dominant message here. The dominant message really is the economy and immigration. And for multiple reasons, the Democratic agenda was less persuasive to voters than the Republican agenda.”

Dr. Bose is a Hofstra University professor of political science, executive dean of the Public Policy and Public Service program, and executive director of the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency.

At the same time, it’s hard to do in a way that makes sense to people who are not statisticians or systems operation experts, he said.
