Maurice A. Deane Distinguished Professor of Constitutional Law Julian Ku recently penned the article “The President Can Act Unilaterally to Defend America Abroad,” for the National Review.



Professor Ku argues that President Trump’s military campaign against the Houthis in Yemen has a strong legal basis under both constitutional and international law.


He stated: “there are many historical examples of U.S. presidents invoking authority to defend U.S. lives and property abroad – including maritime commerce –without getting specific authorization from Congress or the United Nations.”

LI School District Faces Funding Cuts Over Mascot Name Change

Education Professor Alan Singer was interviewed by WCBS-TV News about the Connetquot School District on Long Island school being threatened with funding cuts if it does not reinstate its old mascot name, the Thunderbirds. The name change to T-Birds was made in 2022 to comply with a state ruling that mascot names like “Chiefs” and “Warriors” are demeaning and offensive to Native Americans. The U.S. Department of Education has ruled that these changes are a violation of federal law. Dr. Singer said Connetquot is “caught in the crossfire with the Trump administration, which is at war with blue states and diversity,” and the district’s mascot is part of a much larger political fight.

President Plans to Launch More of His Agenda in Year 2 of His Term

Newsday interviewed Hofstra presidential scholar Meena Bose about the issues President Donald Trump is most focused on in this second year of his second term. In the article, Dr. Bose explained, “In the modern presidency the window of opportunity for action is greatest in the first 12 to 18 months.” After that period the midterms and the focus on the next presidential election, “start to overshadow policy and legislative prospects.” Dr. Bose is a Hofstra University professor of political science, executive dean of the Public Policy and Public Service program, and director of the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency.
