What’s the biggest misconception people have about crime trends today?

One of the biggest misconceptions today is that crime is worse than ever before. In reality, crime rates in the United States have been at historic lows for over a decade. For example, in the early 1990s, the U.S. murder rate exceeded 10 per 100,000 people. Today, that rate is closer to 5 or 6. So, while modern headlines may seem more alarming, the actual level of violent crime is significantly lower than in the past.
