Priya Narasimhan is a human sparkplug. If you come across another person who can talk with this much excitement about technology, I’d love to meet them.
Narasimhan is the founder and CEO of platform developer YinzCam, which has hundreds of team and league clients around the world. We recently connected on the company’s upcoming work with the National Lacrosse League, which will be covered at more depth in next week’s magazine.
YinzCam uses World Cup to innovate with daily features called ‘Ship Happens’

YinzCam founder & CEO Priya Narasimhan said her client roster has a strong soccer presence, including a half-dozen English soccer clubs (such as Brentford, Wolves, Birmingham City), more than half of MLS, Liga MX and the Mexican Football Federation. Though the individual clubs would be going dormant during the FIFA men’s World Cup, fans would naturally want to follow their teams’ players during the event, so YinzCam licensed Opta stats and turned to AI to expedite the creation of new features.
“Football may be global,” Narasimhan said, “but interest is local.”

YinzCam creating jersey patches with NFC tags

Priya Narasimhan, YinzCam’s CEO, told SBJ that she sees sizeable potential for the scannable, which at a base level would populate a digital replica of the physical badge into a user’s collection on the team app (YinzCam rolled out a digital collection badge function earlier this year). These physical badges can house much more though, such as in-app deals and brand partner discounts.
"A fan can essentially walk around wearing these patches, or the team can sell these patches or give them away to season ticket members, or a sponsor can come in and sell those,” Narasimhan said. "And essentially, the patch activates a digital experience sitting only inside the team mobile app.”
Woman of Steel: Priya Narasimhan, CEO and founder of YinzCam, has designs on doing, well, everything

Priya Narasimhan reflected on the latest step in her remarkable journey. YinzCam, the mobile app company of which she is CEO and founder, had just signed the Vodacom Blue Bulls, a rugby team in South Africa. It is YinzCam’s first client on the continent where she grew up. “This one was personal to me,” she said.
Both Narasimhan and YinzCam are global enterprises. She was born in India, raised in Zambia and moved to the United States in 1998 to get her Ph.D. at UC Santa Barbara. Eleven years later, she founded YinzCam, and with the Blue Bulls on board the company now has clients on four continents and close to 200 clients overall. Among them are the NFL (24 team apps and status as the league’s official in-stadium handheld technology provider), the NBA (21 team apps and the league’s official team mobile and arena app developer) and La Liga (as the official app developer).

AI and the Human Side of Sports

Leaders in sports, technology, and research converged at Morningside campus Sept. 12 for the Columbia-Dream Sports AI Innovation Symposium, where the conversation went beyond algorithms and data. The event spotlighted how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the sports industry while celebrating the athletes, coaches, and communities that bring the game to life.
During the opening keynote presentation, Carnegie Mellon’s Priya Narasimhan shared that she didn’t set out to build a global sports technology company. But one night in 2008 at a Pittsburgh Penguins game, watching from the nosebleed section, she realized how much of the action she was missing—angles, stats, insights that could make the experience richer. That moment led to a research project with her computer science students and ultimately to the launch of her startup YinzCam.
When Timeouts Fail: Revisiting Fault Detection under Resource Stress in Edge Computing
UCC '25: Proceedings of the 18th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing (December 2025)Maryam Pourreza, Priya Narasimhan

Timeout-based failure detection is widely used in distributed systems, yet its behavior under the tight resource budgets and latencysensitive workloads of edge environments is poorly understood. Unlike datacenters, where static timeout defaults often suffice, edge deployments risk spurious failovers during transient slowdowns or dangerously delayed detection under genuine faults. We present the first systematic empirical study of static timeouts under controlled resource stress on heterogeneous edge platforms.
