Dan has worked in TV production on several programs including ER, THE SOPRANOS, PARTY OF FIVE, TIME OF YOUR LIFE, FANTASY ISLAND, THE ADVENTURES OF BRISCO COUNTRY JR. SHE TV, and THE WEST WING. Dan directed the pilot MUNHALL starring George Wendt (CHEERS) and Tom Atkins (LAW AND ORDER). Dan directed and produced the film, ENTROPY, which toured the country on the festival circuit. His documentary LISTEN focused on inner city teens and was marketed as a teaching tool in classrooms throughout the United States. As a theatre director, Dan has produced work in New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Chicago, Los Angeles.

As a writer, Dan's produced work includes the film, LISTEN. He also wrote and directed several commercials and PSAs. Other writing work includes CANTERBURY AIR, CREW HOURS, and PORTICO produced in Los Angeles and AN ELF CHORUS LINE produced in New Jersey. He also directed the reading of THE RULES OF A MUSLIM IN LOVE in Los Angeles. As a Casting Director, Dan cast THE KENNEDY MYSTIQUE: CREATING CAMELOT for National Geographic Channel. He also cast NIXON IN CHINA ’72 for Central Chinese Television (CCTV), Beijing, China.

He received his Ph.D. in Higher Education and Organizational Leadership from Azusa Pacific University. His dissertation centered on first-generation student experience at private universities in China using cultural capital as a lens. He received his MFA in directing from Carnegie Mellon University and his BA in acting/directing from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He is a graduate of The Second City and the Players Workshop of Second City, both located in Chicago.

In addition to his work with the MEIM program, Dan oversees The Sylvia and David Steiner Film Fund which is an endowment to cultivate and foster creative screen-based projects at Carnegie Mellon. Dan is a member of The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He is the past president of Carnegie Mellon’s West Coast Drama Alumni Chapter and the past president of the Carnegie Mellon National Alumni Association Board. He was also honored with an Alumni Service Award from the University and delivered the keynote commencement address at Carnegie Mellon University titled AN ARBITRARY TIME.

What if The Beatles used AI to help produce their last song? This episode explores the use of artificial intelligence in music and entertainment.  

With a little help from their friend – Peter Jackson’s AI machine – the Beatles rescued John Lennon's voice from a 1970s demo, allowing them to remix and release their last new song - “Now and Then” – nearly 50 years after Lennon first sang it at the piano.  

However, AI has been used in pop recording sessions for years. Tools like AudioShake can separate vocal and instrumental stems. AI can also clean up and enhance vocals, as demonstrated with a 1923 Bessie Smith recording. AI is used in various ways in music production, from recommending songs to enhancing live performances. However, the use of AI in music raises ethical and legal issues, such as copyright ownership and the fair use of deceased musicians' work. What’s next for AI in music includes spatial audio and new opportunities for collaboration.
