Biography
Alexander Oettl is Acting Professor of Organization & Management at Emory University's Goizueta Business School. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research focuses on the economics of innovation, entrepreneurship, AI, and science, especially how ideas are produced and diffused across individuals, firms, and regions. He received his PhD from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Emory, he spent 17 years on the faculty of Georgia Tech's Scheller College of Business, where he was a professor of strategy and innovation. He was also the founding site lead of CDL-Atlanta, part of the Creative Destruction Lab, a nonprofit program that helps science- and technology-based startups scale through an objectives-based model and intensive mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs, operators, and investors.
Professor Oettl's research has appeared in leading journals including Management Science, Organization Science, Nature, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, PNAS, Journal of Urban Economics, Research Policy, and Journal of International Business Studies. He has received research funding from the National Science Foundation and Schmidt Sciences and was awarded the Kauffman Foundation's Junior Faculty Fellowship in Entrepreneurship Research. His work has been profiled in outlets including The Economist, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, Nature, Science, The Atlantic, and Wired, and he has presented at leading universities and institutions around the world.
